A trip to Africa as a guest of medical informatics conference become an opportunity to help support the first independent -- and quickly successful -- HIV clinic in Ghana, called Aids Ally established in 2001.
In 2001, a person diagnosed with HIV was a medical pariah. No medical care existed for a such a person. Not just no HIV or AIDS care. A broken arm would remain unset due to the hidden fear of the disease, an societal bias against those who carried it, and a knowledge that anyone who contracted the disease would suffer the same ostracism.
